Game of Thrones: Show vs. Series

I am a big time GOT fan. While I was just wondering what should I write about, It occured to me why not write something I would incessantly love to brag about. What can be better than the most popular TV show on Planet? especially when world has lost sleep over last season of the TV show.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

1st episode of final season was recently aired and lot of things happened simultaneously. Siblings reunited, white walkers destroying Umber camp, Jon riding Rhaegal, Bran meeting Jamie, Jon getting to know about R+L=J theory form Sam and the list goes on. I’m especially excited (and worried) about battle of winterfell though. But let’s not get into speculation game about who is going to survive the great war. Im telling you, Better attain nirvana before finale episode or else get ready for pain inflicted by surprise deaths of your beloved characters (FYI, I’m scarred for life by Ned’s execution and red wedding).

What is the difference between GOT show and Novels?

you wont like the truth but once you get into ASOIAF series I assure you that your life won’t remain same. Novels are brilliant at multiple levels but there are some things that show has managed to pull off which look simply ridiculous in books.

for example.

Chemistry between grey worm and missandei is so beautifully crafted in show where as in books it doesn’t exist as she is depicted as 10 year old girl (why? coz GRRM chose to stay realistic to times the characters lived in and had low life expectancy).Drazenka Kimpel Missandei.jpg
Daario Naharis in show is badass and handsome which is nowhere near Daario in books which seems more of clown (wearing vibrant cloths and bright blue hair and trident shaped blue beard accompanied by golden moustache and one gold tooth, lol).

But as a butt hurt fan of ASOIAF I have list of complaints regarding show. There are so many character and timelines that are omitted in TV shows, some events are altered or even erased completely, following are few to be named.

  • Fake Arya (ie. Sansa’s friend Jeyne Poole) and not Sansa marries Ramsay bolton.
  • In books Arya stark serves Roose bolton at harrenhal not Tywin Lannister as shown in show.
  • Catelyn Stark still survives the red wedding in book and goes with name Lady Stoneheart. She was bought back to life by Beric Dondarrion The lord of Light. She dies in show while pleading for her son’s life.Game of Thrones Season 8: Can Catelyn Stark Return as Lady Stoneheart in the Final Season?
  • There is Another Aegon Targaryen (disguised as young griff with blue hair) who returns from essos with Lord Jon connington (friend of Rhaegar Targeryen). Both of them are entirely omitted from the TV show.griff_and_aegon_by_steamey-d7oqnts
  • Arya and jon snow can Warg, like Bran. In books Arya can warg into alley cats and her wolf Nymeria and Jon can enter into body of Ghost. so cool.
  • Doran Martell sends one of his sons (Quentyn) to marry Daenerys but dies shortly after meeting her foolishly trying to tame one of her dragons and is burnt alive.Quentyn martell by kim sokol.jpg
  • In books, Arianne martell, eldest daughter of Doran Martell plans abduction of Myrcella Lannister with Ser Arys oakheart (Member of Roberts Kingsguard).

And the list goes on. Having said this, I must say what TV show has accomplished is no less a cinematic feat in itself. Efforts of crew and cast are admirable and have set pretty high standards in entertainment world.

Should you read novels?

Definitely yes. If you are a reader you just can’t get enough of it. Even after reading GOT series there are many books in ASOIAF world which are simply wonderful to read. Recent one is The Fire and Blood scribed by maester gyldayn, tells the story of Targaryen family from Aegon the conqueror to Aegon III.

I am planning to write detailed review on The Fire and Blood but as of now I would simply recommend with a curt nod to any GOT/ASOIAF fan.

The Future of ASOIAF

I have been following G.R.R Martin’s A song of Ice and fire (ASOIAF) series and It is everything to me. Im eagerly waiting for his next novel in GOT series ie. Winds of Winter (WOW) and A dream of spring (which seems to be Pretty distant release to me). Rumor in town is WOW will be finished somewhere in 2020 (but george is notoriously well known for missing his deadlines, isn’t he?). Whenever GRRM shows up with random tweet, fans wreak havoc on twitter over release of WOW. I kind of feel bad for george.

For now let’s savor every glimpse of the final season of GOT and Pray to seven gods that we get our hands on Winds of Winter as soon as possible.

I know this blog is bit of a stretch to read but I couldn’t help myself as there are so many things to tell about GOT. If you liked this post and want me to write more on this topic please let me know in comments.
